Celebrating Diwali

Sam and Grandma walk together to the cool corner of the garden behind their house. Under the quiet shade of a large green tree, Grandma points to a patch of soft, smooth brown clay near a small trickling stream. She explains the plan for the festival of lights. First, they will collect the clay, then shape it into small lamps, dry them under the warm sun, paint them with bright colors, and finally light them up. Sam nods his head happily and bends down to pick up a little red bucket. - I will carry this bucket of clay for us, Grandma!

The two of them sit together at the wooden table on the front porch to shape their small clay lamps. Grandma hands Sam a piece of wet, soft clay. Sam places the damp clay between his palms and rolls it around and around until it forms a neat little ball. He smiles as he looks at the round shape. - This clay lamp will be as round as a little bird's nest, Grandma. Grandma nods and shows Sam how to press his thumb deep into the center to make a hollow bowl.

The freshly shaped clay lamps are still very wet and soft, so they are not ready to be painted yet. Sam helps Grandma place each lamp onto a wide wooden tray, and they carry them out into the bright, warm sunshine. Under the hot sun, the water slowly evaporates, turning the dark brown clay into a light, dusty brown. Later in the afternoon, Sam gently taps the rim of a lamp with his finger, listening to the dry, crisp sound. The little clay bowls are now hard and strong.

Now, the dry clay lamps are ready to be decorated with bright, festive colors. Sam dips his small paintbrush into a jar of bright yellow paint to make neat dots all around the rim. - I am painting a round yellow dot here. Grandma takes the lamp and uses her brush to paint a wavy blue stripe right next to Sam's yellow dots. - Let me add a blue stripe here to match your dots. The two bright colors create a beautiful repeating pattern around the little clay lamp.

On the clean tiled floor near the entrance, Grandma uses a piece of white chalk to draw a large, beautiful flower outline. She gives Sam cups filled with bright, colorful sand. Sam bends down close to the floor, holding a cup of soft pink sand in his hands. - I will pour the pink sand inside the flower petals, Grandma. He tilts his hand gently, letting the fine sand slide slowly between his fingers to fill the chalk lines, creating a beautiful, symmetrical pattern.

As night falls, the sky turns a deep purple. Sam carefully places the finished clay lamps around the colorful sand flower, and Grandma helps him light the cotton wicks. Looking out from the porch, they see the neighborhood lamps lighting up one by one along the dark street, sparkling like tiny dancing stars. Sam gasps in delight as the whole road glows with warm light. - Look, Grandma, the entire street is shining now! Grandma wraps her arms around the little boy, and they smile together as they watch the beautiful lights of the festival.
